NAPHE hosts free workshop

The North Arkansas Partnership for Health Education (NAPHE) is hosting an interactive workshop on Pickleball and Prevention at the Brandon Burlsworth Youth Center from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m., on Oct. 8. Pickleball has become one of the most social sports and provides an opportunity for people of all ages to play.

Lead Mining in North Arkansas

Lead ore was discovered by early settlers and explorers. It was first used for bullets. In the 1850’s some small mining operations were begun near Dubuque, in northern Carroll and Marion Counties; (this was prior to the formation of Boone County). The state geologist report for the period 1850-58 says, “The diggings have been somewhat deeper in Carroll than in Marion County, but still quite limited, consisting of a few shallow trenches on the hillside and one shaft of 40 feet.”

Fair in full swing

The 137th Northwest Arkansas District Fair kicked off on Sunday Sept. 15., and judging quickly got underway. The educational building is full of ribbon-winning crafts and exhibits on a variety of topics. The carnival has gone up and opens tonight.

Northark fall enrollment sets record high

North Arkansas College fall enrollment has set a record as the highest in the last decade. This semester’s headcount totals 2,090 students, surpassing the second highest enrollment period in 2014 by 84 students.

Drugs discovered on school property

According to an affidavit filed in Boone County Circuit Court this week, a maintenance man working at Harrison Middle School is being charged with possession of meth or cocaine — less than 2 grams, a Class D Felony. The charge comes after a drug stash, believed to belong to 55 year-old Joseph Christie, was found on school property and reported to police.

JASPER — Senator Bryan King, (R) District 28, chairman of the Senate Children and Youth Committee, brought a panel of legislators to Newton County on Monday, Sept. 9, to hear constituents' concerns about the areas' streams and rivers.

Members of local service organizations, businesses, and others from the community, gathered together to "serve those who serve others" on Wednesday, Sept. 11. Following a ceremony marking the anniversary of the 9/11 bombings of the World Trade Center towers, area first responders were invited to enjoy a free lunch and visit with their peers in the Harrison Fire Department station on Industrial Drive.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Hiland Dairy Foods Co. is announcing the expansion of its Tyler, Texas, operations, reinforcing the company’s long-term commitment to the community and the local economy. This significant investment will add 90,000 square feet to the existing facility at 200 Fuller Ave., which will include state-of-the-art processing, filling, casing, palletizing, load-out, storage areas, and a new laboratory. The expansion is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2026.
LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Construction Education Foundation (ACEF) has announced a transition in leadership. Kathy Fulks, who has served as Executive Director for nine years, has retired. Department of Education releases details for FAFSA testing

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Wednesday, Sept. 11, The U.S. Department of Education announced additional details of the subsequent beta testing period ahead of making the 2025–26 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available to all students and contributors on or before Dec. 1. Starting on Sept. 11, high schools, community-based organizations (CBOs), institutions of higher education and state entities can submit the interest form to participate in subsequent stages of the testing period, including Beta 2 (launching in mid-October), Beta 3 (early November), and Beta 4 (mid-November).

Rumwolf is a multidisciplinary visual and performance artist based in Northwest Arkansas. He currently lives in Bentonville with his 17 year-old daughter Lyric, who is also a musician and artist. Rumwolf works out of a studio at Backroom Social Club in downtown Bentonville — a designated space shared with several members of an unofficial art collective.

The Crossroads Church near Compton will hold annual revival services September 15-20. Services begin at 7 p.m. nightly. Crossroads Church is located at 2674 NC 1000, off Fire Tower Road. We attended the outdoor revivals at Crossroads for many years when I was younger. I remember the old brush arbor that Uncle Arie Villines and Lester Chisum put up there before they built the outdoor tabernacle. We have fond memories of those good people and the services we attended

Ground gets ready for new Northark space

North Arkansas College Vice President of Finance and Administration Richard Stipe reported the site work on the school's Center for Robotics and Manufacturing Innovation (CRMI) has moved into the final stage of dirt work. Crews have now completed removing rock and are adding dirt in preparation for the start of the building construction. Next steps include digging water and sewer lines.
